The Exorcist is truly one of the most terrifying films of all time, and there’s many scenes in this classic horror that will chill you down to the bone – head spinning, spider walking, pea soup vomiting, crucifix…ya know. For us, Father Merrin (Max von Sydow) and Father Karras (Jason Miller) trying to cast the demon out of young Regan (Linda Blair) – ‘The Power of Christ Compels You!’ – as she levitates towards the ceiling is pretty much out there. They then see a haunting glimpse of the true demon. You’ll need a stiff drink after this one.
If Martyrs is one of the most extreme horror movies ever, The Exorcist is one of the scariest. Linda Blair was 14 years old when she played Regan, the girl possessed by a demon, and her performance is extraordinary and ultra disturbing.
It’s got many legendary scenes, including the crucifix, spider walk and projectile vomiting and is absolutely terrifying. It’s also really well made and special kudos goes to Jason Miller as Father Damien Karras – he is fantastic.
YOUR MOTHER SUCKS…: It’s too rude to say
GORE RATING: 1/5
TOTAL HALLOWEEN VIEWING RATING: 10/10
Watch it for: It’s one of THE seminal horror movies
Watch out for: There’s so many scary bits. The final day of the exorcism is realllly heavy
A surprisingly good watch, The Possession is about a young girl called Em (Natasha Calis) who picks up a mysterious, old wooden box at a yard sale which – naturally – contains a rather nasty malicious spirit in it called a dybbuk. The dybbuk needs a host and when Em opens the box, it possesses her. Her family start to notice a drastic change in her behaviour, including swarming insects, attitude problems and making her Mum’s new boyfriend’s teeth fall out in one go. Eugh.
Act 3 is the exorcism itself, which is actually pretty terrifying. Comparisons can be made to the movie being a contemporary version of The Exorcist – that stands – and The Possession is a fun, spooky, noncommital view for this pumpkintastic season.
DOES HER HEAD SPIN? Nahhhhh
